How I Spent a Week in Morocco on Just $250 — My Budget Travel Diary

Honestly, when I first booked my trip to Morocco, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had exactly $250 in my travel fund — not a dollar more — and somehow, I wanted to stretch it across seven days.

Well, not only did I survive… I had one of the best weeks of my life.

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech (Budget Shock... and Delight)

As soon as I landed in Marrakech, I felt that mix of chaos and charm. The sounds, the colors, the smells — it was overwhelming, in the best way.

My first win? A hostel bed right near Jemaa el-Fnaa square for just $9 a night, including breakfast. Not bad, right?

Days 2-3: Souks, Tagine, and Negotiation Lessons

I quickly learned that bargaining isn’t just accepted here — it’s expected. At first, I was terrible at it. I’d ask the price, they’d answer, I’d pay. Simple. But after a vendor laughed and called me “rookie,” I started to get the hang of it.

I ate like royalty: steaming plates of chicken tagine, fresh bread, mint tea… and most meals cost under $3. Honestly, I’ve spent more on coffee back home.

Day 4: Into the Atlas Mountains (for Pennies!)

I hopped on a shared taxi with some locals heading toward the Atlas Mountains. The ride cost me less than $5. The air got cooler, the scenery more stunning.

That night, I stayed at a tiny guesthouse run by a sweet family. Dinner? Homemade couscous under the stars, included in the $12 room price. Unreal.

Days 5-6: Getting Lost in Fez (and Loving It)

Fez was a maze. I must have gotten lost a dozen times in the medina’s narrow alleys. But every wrong turn led to something wonderful — a hidden courtyard, a friendly baker, a tiny shop selling handwoven rugs.

I bought a small leather wallet from the tanneries — after bargaining like a pro — for just $8. It still smells amazing.

Day 7: Final Day, Full Heart

By my last day, I still had a few dollars left. I spent them on pastries and one final mint tea, sitting on a rooftop café overlooking the city.

I couldn’t believe I’d managed to travel through Morocco on such a tiny budget. But honestly, the best parts of the trip didn’t cost anything at all — it was the people, the laughter, the unexpected kindness around every corner.

My Total Costs (Yes, Really!)

  • Hostels & Guesthouses: $72
  • Food & Drinks: $55
  • Transportation: $40
  • Souvenirs: $15
  • Experiences & Tours: $25
  • Miscellaneous: $18

Total: $225 — I even came home with a few bucks to spare!
